Bench-Testing Ryobi 40V Lawn Mower Motor with e-bike Controller

I do a quick bench test of a Ryobi lawn mower motor. See details by clicking SHOW MORE!

I got a 20" Ryobi push mower donated to me a while back. That uses the 40V battery system. I took the mower apart to get at the motor and controller. The stock controller only allows for a single-speed ON/OFF, so I upgraded it to a 500W controller with variable speed and forward and reverse. I’m running this with a thumb throttle.

I have plenty of 18V Ryobi batteries around, so I connected a pair in SERIES with a set of tool battery adapters. Those have an automotive-type fuse holder between the two of them. Batteries like this are very popular, so I figure it’s easy for other people to copy my projects with me using them.

I’m sort of working on a system to make a "universal low-power EV kit". Using some inexpensive parts, and batteries we already have, we can convert all sorts of small engine style projects to electric.

In this case, it might end up driving a small transmission through a belt and pulley.
