I found a Hart 40V lawn mower for cheap! I already have some Ryobi 40V equipment and batteries and I’ve heard mixed messages on whether or not Hart and Ryobi 40V batteries are compatible.
So, I bought the mower and experimented to see what it would take to power the Hart from a Ryobi 40V battery.
Basically, the Hart and Ryobi batteries are the same size, shape, and voltage. What is different is the end of the battery where the actual connections are. The Ryobi has male connections on the battery and female connections on the equipment. The Hart is opposite – male connections on the equipment and female connections on the battery!
Besides the + and – terminals, there is also a pair of temperature connections.
I rigged up a cable to connect the Ryobi battery to the Hart mower. I tried turning it on….. and nothing happened.
Hmmm. It must not power up if the temperature terminals are not connected. I put my multimeter on the temperature connectors of the Ryobi battery and saw that it measures about 40kohm. I dug through my box of resistors and found some that equalled about 40kohm and connected them to the temperature terminals in the Hart mower.
I tried again to turn on the mower. Success! It fired right up!
So, the Hart and Ryobi batteries appear to be the same but have different terminal connections. And yes, if you get around that, the one will run the other just fine.
I may do some experimenting an 3d-print a connector to go between the Ryobi battery and the Hart mower. I’m pretty sure I can modify the "spare battery holder" space to be a new position for the Ryobi battery.
I already 3D-printed a 40V battery connection for my electric bicycle. That runs great on 40V Ryobi batteries! I’ll probably just modify a version of that for the Hart lawn mower. Ideally, with the two positions, it will be able to run on either Hart OR Ryobi batteries!
