This case raises an important question about how illegal mobility devices should be handled.
According to reports, a PMD that was removed by the Town Council was later returned to its owner after a promise was made to keep the device indoors.
The issue? If the device is eventually found to be illegal or non-compliant under LTA regulations, returning it may unintentionally allow it to continue being possessed, used, sold, or charged, potentially putting residents at risk.
โ ๏ธ Here’s something many people may not know:
Since 1 June 2026, it is an offence not only to use an illegal PMD, but also to ๐๐๐ one.
That means even if an illegal PMD is sitting at home and not being ridden, the owner may still be committing an offence.
๐จ Penalties for possessing an illegal PMD can include:
๐ฐ Up to $2,000 fine
โ๏ธ Up to 3 months’ jail
โ๏ธ Or both
๐ก This is not about blaming the Town Council.
In fact, we appreciate that they responded to residents’ concerns and referred the matter to LTA for further checks. However, there should have been proper guidelines to dispose of these illegal PMDs once confiscated.
MOBOT is the official e-recycling partner for ALBA, so you can dispose of your non-compliant or unused Active Mobility Devices at any of our 3 outlets!
