Pedal-assist eBikes are the perfect complement to an active lifestyle. Bob Harper, host of USA’s The Biggest Loser knows this first-hand; he rides a Bosch-equipped electric bicycle made by Tern Bicycles.
“There are some people out there that think that the eBike does all the work,” says Harper. “That couldn’t be farther from the truth. You’re still being very physical, you’re being active—and you’re also being kind to your body.”
Electric bikes that use the Bosch drive system (motor, battery, and computer display) allow riders to select the level of assistance they receive from the bike while pedalling. “Pedal-assist” eBikes only work when a rider is pedalling—there’s no throttle. But, the Bosch electric motor provides four levels of assistance, from “Eco” to “Turbo,” enabling riders to moderate their effort and how hard they want to work out (or not work out!). “There are options,” reinforces Harper, “and I like options.”
In addition to the physical benefits of riding an eBike (studies show that eBike riders get up to 94% of the workout of traditional cyclists because they ride faster, farther, and more often), there are myriad mental and emotional plusses to riding an eBike.
Harper says riding his eBike helps him to be more present: “It slows down everything around me and allows me to be here, now.”
