EV Conversion Battery Pack Placement - Tesla Pack under VW Bus Camper

I test fit my "cut-in-half" battery pack under the VW campervan.

This is one half of a case from an old Tesla Model S. I have it positioned under the camper pretty darn close to where it would go. It is lifted up as high as it can go with a jack.

I have 12 Tesla modules that I plan to use for the conversion. The battery case under the bus holds 8 modules. The other four will go in the engine compartment. Spreading out where the battery modules are reduces the weight on the rear axle and lowers the center of gravity.

The main rails under the bus are about 4" tall. While it would be possible to get a few modules between the frame rails, it makes designing a battery pack case considerably more complex! In fact, I looked at a Vanagon conversion that did this. It looked very clean, but the person who converted it said he would never do it again – too much of a pain in pack design!

There is still one other battery concept I would like to try. It appears that there’s enough width between the two main frame rails that I could mount TWO Tesla modules side by side. They would be recessed compared to the bottom of the bus. I could stack 3 layers x 2 wide for 6 modules. That would be two less than re-using the Tesla case, but they would be tucked in much further from the outside. Better for looks AND protecting the batteries. They would stick DOWN slightly more, and I would have to design a pack case more or less from scratch. There should still be room for the other 6 modules in the engine compartment.
