RC Lawn Mower Blade Control and Safety Features

Working to build a remote control lawn mower, I figure out what it takes to start and stop the blades as well as what happens in an emergency. PLEASE PRESS SHOW MORE!

I’m using a Ryobi 40V electric mower with a 20” cut, a Flysky RC transmitter and receiver, and components salvaged from a mobility scooter, including the motors.

RC Relay: https://amzn.to/4jxESO7

Turning the blade on and off is controlled by a relay connected to the receiver

The wheel motors are powered by an 18V battery and the mower deck uses the original 40v battery. (40V is both too fast for the wheels and too high of a voltage for the motor controller. 18V works great, and I already have plenty of those batteries!)

I was able to find settings in the transmitter menu which allow for changing the default outputs on FAILSAFE – what happens if there’s an error like the receiver losing signal. I changed those settings to stop the wheels and power down the blade.

Restarting the blade will mean being physically at the mower. This is useful for removing a stuck item under the mower or simply preventing starting the mower with it out of sight, not knowing whether or not it’s safe to do so.
